this song was supposed to be the last of the album but by default 2 more appeared to me. the crystal shit referred to in v1 is a reference to definite cosmic signals being sent to me thruout the making of this album. i realized certain songs that i had written recently and in the past had predicted events that came to pass. the examples (at least 20 or so) were rarely consequential and often as shocking as life and death. i told several people (beach, jen, mom, jessica, pat) about the different examples and some of these peeps were quite taken aback. another overwhelming premonition was that for some reason i wouldn't be making it back home from a then future trip to n.y.. jen and i had a farewell party two days before leaving for n.y. under the guise of an "album completion party". we wanted to see our pals one more time b4 we bit the big one. after the party i gave beach what i jokingly referred to as babs black box. in it was the masters for most of the 41 albums i completed on this earth plus instructions on the finishing of THIS particular bitchwad.

i am presently writing this in n.y.. the date is 9/12/01. i was scheduled to fly home today but all flight in the u.s. is canceled due to the terrorist attack on the united states yesterday. i have a car reserved for tomorrow and if all goes well i will be driving off this island (manhattan) and onto the continent at about 11am. i asked jen to marry me yesterday and she said huh? i mean uh yeah. we are currently trying to keep on keepin' on. i will be emailing this to beach on its completion in a few minutes. ho ho ho...

I've been away for awhile. Sorry about that. We pick up where we left off. The next track. A revisit of a song from before. You Are Not Alone Jen. It's a drepressing track in light of recent developments. For all I know, Jen is alone. I'm not sure.

This album is winding down. I'm looking forward to moving on. I love this album. And I know you do too. But I'm excited because we have so much more for you to hear. Every day will be surprise. I don't know where I'll begin... At the end of Pouquoi, I'm planning on doing a full album cast. Not sure if that's been done before... we'll have to see.

Going through it day by day, song by song, has brought up a lot of memories and feelings. This song is one of Bab's best. I don't know what he thinks, but it has everything you could ask.

In the days and weeks leading up to Bab and Jen's trip to NYC things got more intense. Bab was really freaking us out. He was convinced that he would not return. That something terrible would happen during their stay in NYC to prevent them from either returning or living. This meant that he had to finish the album before he left.

We had no idea what he was talking about. He would call Pat and Me and I'm sure others to prepare us for something awful. We thought he was on drugs. We thought he was suicidal. We couldn't understand why a simple trip to New York would cause such a panic. It was bizarre behavior to say the least. But he was Bab, and Bab is different. So we tried to console him as best we could, we even said that maybe he shouldn't go... but he had to go. I mean this was a vacation to the greatest city in the world. It will be fun. There's bands and bars and lights and touristy stuff and history, what could go wrong?

On the day before he left, he had a listening party. He had never done that before. He had just finished the album a few hours earlier and he invited all of the friends over to hear it. It felt like a goodbye party. Everyone was a little uneasy because of what Bab had been saying. But we tried to enjoy ourselves and it was clear just by listening to it, that it was his greatest work to date. That was also frightening to me. I mean what a way to go out! Flame on! I can't express the tension and apprehension that was in the air. I'm sure lots of people were thinking of Dale that night as well. Is this what Bab was planning? Some kind of suicide?

He kept saying that he had no intention of doing that, but he wasn't coming back. He wasn't moving there either. He didn't know what was going to happen, but it probably meant his death.

At the end of the party, Bab gave me a box. It was filled with the master tapes of every album he ever recorded plus instructions on what to do with Pourquoi. He told me where to take a photo for the cover, what to say in the liner notes, how to release it, etc. It was crazy. I kept trying to reassure him. He said that it was probably something to do with a plane. I said that people fly in and out of New York everyday. Nothing happens. Nothing will happen...

He said he knew, and we said goodbye.

On the morning of 9/11 when I heard about what happened. My first thought was of Bab. This is what he meant. It had to be. I thought he was dead.

it is 6:50 am, 9/12/01. the manhattan morning is broken by the first of many sirens to come on this post apocalyptic airplane disaster day. as much as i dislike all bastions of excess, greed, pollution, crime, garbage, etc..., vis a vis cities, i must admit the applers came thru with gold stars all around yesterday. if this had happened in some other civilized burg such as l.a., there would have been rape, pillage, carnage, and the possible beginning of the end. the plastic people these apples were not. i only saw 2 people still working on their tan. tinsletown would have had enuf mayhem from the overflow in the tanning salons alone to start the implosion. new york song cockroach was written on arrival to the house that ruth built. it was a semi-mocking jolson, mermanesque jibe at the horror known as metropolis. the sun coming down on you. may it not.
